What makes PRF special is that its support did not end when I graduated. Looking back, they gave me much more than financial assistance.

Where the journey began

My name is Waqas Akram, and I am a graduate of Electrical Engineering from UET Taxila. My journey would have been very different without the support of the People’s REACH Foundation (PRF).

I topped F.Sc. (Pre-Engineering) at PAF College Shorkot Cantt and later secured admission to UET Taxila in Electrical Engineering.

I joined PRF’s Candle to Candle Program during my third semester, at a time when my family was facing serious financial difficulties. The cost of tuition, hostel accommodation, transportation, and daily expenses made it increasingly difficult for me to continue my studies. Through Dr. Azeem Sultan, one of my father’s friends, I was introduced to PRF.

PRF provided the financial support I needed to stay focused on my education instead of worrying about how I would cover my expenses. Their assistance allowed me to complete my engineering degree with peace of mind and confidence in my future.

After graduation

After graduation, however, I faced a new challenge. Despite my best efforts, I struggled for nearly two and a half years to find a suitable job in my field. The uncertainty was stressful, and there were times when I felt discouraged about my career prospects.

What makes PRF special is that its support did not end when I graduated. Uncle Rashid Ahmad continued to guide and encourage me during this difficult period. Through him, I was introduced to Nouman Sahib, who suggested that I explore opportunities in the IT industry. Initially, I was reluctant because I wanted to build my career in electrical engineering. But after continued struggles in the job market, I decided to give it a chance.

That decision changed my life. I began learning new skills, transitioned into the technology sector, and eventually started my career as an AI/ML Engineer. Today, I work in a field that excites me and offers endless opportunities for growth and innovation.

More than financial support

Looking back, I realize that PRF gave me much more than financial assistance. They provided mentorship, guidance, and a support system that believed in me during some of the most challenging periods of my life. I am deeply grateful to PRF, Uncle Dr. Azeem Sultan, Uncle Rashid Ahmad, and Nouman Sahib for helping me build a future that once seemed out of reach.

My story is a reminder that when someone invests in a student’s potential, they are not just supporting an education; they are helping shape a life.

Lighting the next candle

Finally, I plan to light the next candle starting with Academic Year 2026-2027. I hope to change the life of another student. That is the spirit of our Candle to Candle Program.
